Tuttavia, dopoil 1937, il lavoro di Cagli attir\u00f2 feroci critiche da parte dei soggetti reazionari all&#8217;interno dell&#8217;establishment fascista. Quale artistaebreo e apertamente omosessuale, Cagli divenne bersaglio di attacchi virulenti, soprattutto a seguito della promulgazione in Italiadelle leggi razziali del 1938.<\/p><p>A causa di tali condizioni ostili, Cagli scelse di lasciare la sua terra natale e cercare rifugio negli Stati Uniti. In America divenneuna figura influente nel <em>milieu <\/em>culturale ed artistico degli emigrati a New York. Trov\u00f2 rispondenza nell&#8217;ambiente neoromanticofacente capo alla Julian Levy Gallery e al Wadsworth Atheneum. Fu attivo nell&#8217;ambiente dei surrealisti anti-bretoni della rivista<em>View <\/em>e divenne protagonista di un momento fondamentale della cultura gay di New York, collaborando con artisti coinvolti con la Ballet Society e con Harper&#8217;s Bazaar, ed esponendo alla galleria di Alexander Iolas. Durante i suoi dieci anni di permanenza inAmerica, Cagli continu\u00f2 a produrre ed esporre disegni, un mezzo che gli permise di interrogare e criticare la retorica fascista.Mentre infuriava la seconda guerra mondiale, Cagli si arruol\u00f2 nell&#8217;esercito americano, svolgendo addestramento sulla costaoccidentale, prima di tornare in Europa per partecipare a eventi storici, quali il D-Day e la liberazione del campo di concentramento di Buchenwald. Alla fine della guerra Corrado Cagli gioc\u00f2 un ruolo cruciale nel ristabilire i legami culturali tra Italia e Stati Uniti, collaborando con il MoMA, Irene Brin e la galleria romana L&#8217;Obelisco.<\/p><p>La nuova mostra del Center for Italian Modern Art, che include disegni, dipinti, foto ed ephemera, non esplora solo i temi della guerra, dell&#8217;esilio e della discriminazione, ma mette anche in luce il poliedrico impegno di Cagli con l&#8217;ambiente surrealista eneoromantico di New York. Inoltre, la mostra fa luce sulla sua collaborazione con George Balanchine e la Ballet Society,evidenziando la profondit\u00e0 e la ricchezza della sua eredit\u00e0 artistica.<\/p><p>Il curatore Raffaele Bedarida, PhD, storico dell&#8217;arte specializzato in modernismo e politica transnazionale, ha una vasta esperienzanei temi di diplomazia culturale, migrazione e scambi tra Italia e Stati Uniti, ed \u00e8 dunque particolarmente qualificato ad illustrare l&#8217;affascinante narrativa di Cagli. Il CIMA \u00e8 onorato di presentare <em>Transatlantic Bridges: Corrado Cagli,<\/em><em> 1938- 1948, <\/em>ed orgoglioso di esibire il lavoro di un artista straordinario, la cui vita e il cui lavoro costituiscono un richiamano ai temi di perseveranza,trasformazione ed espressione artistica, possibili nonostante le avversit\u00e0. La mostra costituir\u00e0 un&#8217;esplorazione stimolante eapprofondita di un capitolo spesso trascurato della storia dell&#8217;arte italiana e americana.<\/p><p>La mostra \u00e8 accompagnata da un nutrito calendario di eventi aperti al pubblico. Parte dei programmi \u00e8 concepita in collaborazione con il Centro Primo Levi, che generosamente contribuisce all\u2019analisi della vita e dell\u2019opera di Cagli attraverso la pubblicazione dell\u2019edizione in lingua inglese del libro di Raffaele Bedarida sull\u2019artista.<\/p><p>Un ciclo di incontri e conversazioni con artisti contemporanei, concepito in risposta all\u2019assegnazione di un premio ricevuto dal CIMA dalla Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, affronter\u00e0 i temi suggeriti dalla mostra di Cagli.<\/p><p>Tutti gli eventi pubblici del CIMA sono resi possibili grazie al generoso contributo della <em>Fondazione<\/em> <em>Tiro <\/em><em>a Segno <\/em>di New York.
